Madeline Miller - Circe

Writer's picture: SusanSusan

Circe is a daughter of Helios, the God of Sun, and a beautiful nymph Perse. When she’s born not only has she not inherited any of her father’s divine powers but voice is frail and her features are too sharp to be considered beautiful. She becomes a disgrace to her whole family. She is bullied by her brothers and sisters, overlooked by her father and scorned by her mother. Moreover, she discovers her true power, a power that even the Gods fear- that of witchcraft. Out of jealousy and unrequited love she turns her love rival into a monster and therefore is punished with exile. One might believe that now she is free of the Gods’ wrath but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I have heard a lot of praise for this book so I was expecting something exceptional. The beginning is promising although a bit slow. When I got to the middle I was considering putting it back on the shelf thinking if I would do much better to read the Ancient Greek Myths instead I. The end made up for it a bit but the book didn’t live up to the expectations I had. It’s like a new coat with an old lining.
