Michael Ende - The Neverending Story

Writer's picture: SusanSusan

Bastian is often bullied at school, his grades are poor and his father has become indifferent and distant since his wife died. But Bastian’s life changes when he steals a magic book and gets lost in the story. In the beautiful world of Fantastica, the Childlike Empress is gravely ill and across the realm the grey Nothingness starts to spread. Atreyu, one of the bravest hunters in the kingdom, is sent on a dangerous quest to find a cure for the Empress before the Nothingness devours everything. Time is slowly running out and the cure might be in a different world far beyond Fantastica…

Although this story is fresh and original it lacks suspense and it’s sluggish. If I were to exaggerate it seems as though that the main hero gets everything served to him on a silver plate without facing any major struggle or needing to use his wits. He only has to endure tiredness and to fulfil the quest he just needs to be merely present. By the end I really disliked Bastian for his cowardice which only served to make the book slightly cringe worthy. I just expected so much more from such an iconic book but in the end I was glad it was over because it was sending me to sleep.
